Are you experiencing pain or stiffness in the knees? Are they swollen, or do they grind or give way when you walk? If so, the experienced team at Whittlesea Physiotherapy can help. Knee injuries are extremely common and can put you out of action for an extended period of time.

At Whittlesea Physiotherapy we are focused on achieving the best possible results for all of our patients and, as such, utilize a number of different techniques to ensure an optimal recovery. This involves a complete comprehensive assessment to determine an exact diagnosis and all contributing factors, an individualised treatment plan and the provision of advice and treatment to speed up your recovery and get you active again.

Types of knee injuries:
While there are a number of different knee injuries, they can broadly be separated into the following categories:

Acute injuries: result from a sudden trauma, such as an awkward fall, collision, twist of the knee joint or accident.
Acute injuries that commonly occur are:

  • Ligament injuries (sprains or tears) - Medial Collateral Ligament, Lateral Collateral Ligament, Anterior Cruciate Ligament or Posterior Cruciate Ligament
  • Meniscal injuries - Medial or Lateral meniscal tears
  • Fractures

Overuse injuries: These result from continuous activity or overload, such as running, jumping, cycling, weight training or bushwalking. They start gradually and usually relate to a range of factors such as structural or biomechanical problems, training methods, footwear, technique or running style. If left untreated they often get progressively worse, and may cause long term damage. Early diagnosis and treatment often results in a quicker recovery, less pain and a reduced chance or injury recurrence.
Common overuse injuries include:

  • Patello-femoral Joint Syndrome
  • Iliotibial Band Friction Syndrome
  • Patella Tendinopathy ("Jumper's Knee")
  • Bursitis
  • Various muscular imbalances

Your physiotherapist will examine your knee to determine the type, extent and causes of your injury, and can order imaging if needed. Early treatment will reduce pain and swelling and get you back moving as soon as possible.

Your management is likely to include exercises to improve the strength of the knee and other lower leg muscles, to enhance your recovery and help prevent further injuries. Taping may also be utilized to provide additional support until your knee has recovered sufficiently. Recovery can start very early after an injury and the sooner you begin rehabilitation, the better the prognosis.

If you are experiencing knee pain, then call our clinic today so you can return to the activities you enjoy as soon as possible.
