DRAM
Diastasis (separation) of Rectus Abdominis Muscle
A DRAM refers to a separation and stretch of connective tissue (linea alba) located between the two rectus abdominis muscles. Commonly, 2 in 3 women can experience DRAMs within pre-natal populations, and can remain postnatally. Due to the role of the abdominal wall being a primary structure in the lumbopelvic stabilisation system, women can experience associated lower back and pelvic girdle pain.

Contributing factors to DRAM presentations include: hormonal changes, abdominal weakness, weight gain and stretch placed on the abdominal wall secondary to growing foetus.
Your Physiotherapist plays an important role in your management and rehabilitation which can include a combination of the following:
- Education regarding activity and exercise modification
- Tubigrip
- Deep abdominal training
- Home exercise program (focus on lumbo pelvic control)
- Pre- and post- natal exercise group
If you would like to book an appointment with one of our Physiotherapists or require more information please contact one of our friendly staff members on 9716 2250.
