Dry Needling & Acupunture

Dry needling and Acupuncture have become a popular treatment techniques of late and one which we use to great effect in our clinic to help reduce pain and restore your function. It is based on western medicine principals and has proven an effective method for releasing taut muscles and eliminating the trigger points that often develop in longer standing pain syndromes. In addition, many believe that dry needling also provides similar effects to traditional acupuncture, whereby it improves blood flow to the affected muscles, stimulating healing and removing toxins. It is further thought to promote the release of body chemicals which promote pain reduction and relaxation.

When undergoing dry needling, a filiform needle is inserted perpendicularly through the skin into the tight band of muscle. You will often feel an episode of pain under the needle, a reproduction of your symptoms or twitching of the muscle being released. The muscle may initially ‘grasp’ the needle, however this is followed by a gradual relaxation of the muscle, after which the muscle will release and lengthen. This results in a reduction in pain and dysfunction of the affected muscle.Acupunture in Whittlesea

Will Dry Needling and Acupuncture Benefit Me?

Because it targets individual muscles, dry needling is effective in treating any musculoskeletal condition in which muscle tightness and pain are contributing to your injury. This is especially the case in chronic or long standing injuries in which the muscles may have been in spasm or shortened over a longer period of time.

It is important to note that a number of trigger points can be needled in a single treatment, getting a greater overall effect. There may be some residual tenderness following a session, however this can be greatly averted by the use of heat following your treatment.
