Assessing Your Bone HealthBone health is essential, particularly as we age. understanding bone Health

Bone strength relies on density and the internal structure of bones. Over time, factors like aging, hormonal changes (especially after menopause), genetics, certain medications, and lifestyle habits can decrease bone density and alter bone structure. These changes increase the risk of conditions like osteoporosis and osteopenia, affecting millions of Australians.

The Silent Nature of Osteoporosis and osteopenia

Osteoporosis and osteopenia often go unnoticed until a fracture occurs or visible postural changes develop. Two-thirds of Australians over 50 are affected, with most cases involving osteopenia. Fractures from these conditions impact the hip, spine, wrist, arm, and pelvis, leading to persistent pain, loss of confidence, and reduced independence. In Australia, an osteoporosis-related fracture occurs every 3.4 minutes, with rates expected to rise.

Early assessment can help reduce risks through tailored therapy and lifestyle modifications.

Assessing Your Bone Health

To learn your risk level, consider using the Know Your Bones online tool https://healthybonesaustralia.org.au/. Factors like family history, early menopause, low-
trauma fractures, certain medications, low body weight, inadequate calcium and vitamin D, smoking, and low physical activity all increase risk.

Diagnosing and Managing Osteoporosis and osteopenia

A bone mineral density test, arranged by your GP, can confirm osteoporosis or osteopenia, enabling a focused treatment approach. With your healthcare team — including your physiotherapist, GP, and potentially a rheumatologist or endocrinologist — you can develop a plan for improved bone health. This often includes regular physical activity, a balanced diet, and healthy lifestyle changes.

How Physiotherapy can Help

Physiotherapy is integral to managing osteoporosis and osteopenia, offering benefits like:

  • Bone-strengthening exercise programs
  • Posture improvement exercises
  • Balance training to reduce fall risk
  • Pain management following fractures
  • Education regarding lifestyle factors and modification

Many studies have shown that a structured exercise program can support bone health and
reduce falls. Our new Bone Density Improvement Program offers:

  • Supervised, targeted and tailored exercises twice per week for 30 minutes
  • Customised movements to increase bone strength
  • Education and handouts on managing and improving bone density

Our program is ideal for those with osteoporosis, osteopenia, or at risk of bone density loss. Guided by experienced physiotherapists, this 10-week journey provides valuable tools to help you achieve stronger bones and better health.
