The core muscles are made up of the deeper layers of the abdominal and spinal muscles. These muscles include the Transversis Abdominis, Lumbar Multifidis and pelvic floor muscles. The main function of these muscles is to stabilise the lower back and pelvis BEFORE movement of the arms and legs. These muscles act as a bracing mechanism in anticipation of movement, which can be commonly effected by pain or an injury to the spine, poor posture, abdominal surgery or pregnancy.
When these muscles are not functioning correctly an increased load is placed on the spine and it is not uncommon for other muscles to over compensate and become fatigued and tight. This muscular imbalance/dysfunction can lead to ongoing pain, delayed recovery from injury and place you at a higher risk of new injury. Performance can also be affected compromising power, strength, speed and endurance.
Good core strength is essential for normal movement and function and is particularly important when participating in sports, physically demanding or repetitive activities and being able to perform to the best of your ability. Core strengthening exercises are the foundation of any good exercise program or rehabilitation. It is important to get it right for each individual as we all have differences. If you need further advice or an assessment of your core strength, contact us at the clinic to schedule an appointment.
