Do You Have Neck Pain?

Aug 28, 2022 | Neck

Over the past few years, the pandemic has changed the way many of us live our lives day to day. For many of us we have become much more reliant on technology for work, leisure and communication. The combination of leading more sedentary lifestyles and the poor postures we develop when using technological devices such as phones and laptops has led to a spike in postural related musculoskeletal injuries. One of the biggest complaints we have had at the clinic recently relates to gradual onset neck pain.

On average, 54% of individuals have experienced neck pain in the past 12 months. Neck related pain also roughly accounts for up to 25% of private practice physiotherapy complaints.

There are many different causes for neck pain including disc issues, nerve impingement and degenerative changes. However, the most common cause is impaired muscle function.

Below are some of the main risk factors for developing neck pain:

  • Poor posture.
  • Poor desk set up/ergonomics.
  • Awkward sleeping positions.
  • Trauma/whiplash.
  • Overuse/repetitive movements.
  • Poor mental health.
  • Smoking.

Physiotherapists play a crucial role in the prevention and treatment of neck pain. Physiotherapists can offer valuable advice and education regarding pain management and posture, hands on treatment for pain relief and specific tailored exercise programs to help improve posture, range of movement, strength and general fitness.
