Getting back to normal and getting back to fitness

Nov 26, 2021 | Exercise

It’s been a long cold winter. We’ve been locked inside with not a heap to do besides waiting, cleaning and streaming. The garden looks great, but we might not have been looking after ourselves. As the weather warms up and the restrictions begin to ease, lots of us will be looking at starting our exercise regime again. But where do we start?

Gyms will be opened; Pilates classes will soon be filled. Will you be ready? Running and cycling are great, for some walking can be even better. Some have done more than others. Are you ready to get back to doing your normal exercise?

If we learned anything last year (and I think we learned a lot), we discovered it can be very difficult to flick a switch and get back to being fit. It’s hard work trying to jump straight back into the gym, or bushwalking or running 5km when we haven’t been as active as we could have been over the cold winter months.

If we jump in the deep end too quick, we increase our chances of getting hurt. We will all benefit  from a plan. A guide to get us from where we are, to where we want to be. It might be a daily home-based exercise program that is tailored to your needs. It could be a graduated running program, designed with your long-term goals in mind. For some, supervised Clinical Pilates classes or 1-1 sessions that focus on safe strengthening exercises will be best way to ensure a smooth transition back to normal fitness. But we need to start!
