Severs Disease is a common, temporary heel condition that affects adolescents during rapid periods of growth (growth spurts).

The cause of this condition is inflammation of the growth plate in the heel. The muscles and tendons become very tight and over stretched and where the Achilles Tendon attaches to the heel it causes extra stress. This growth plate which results in swelling, tenderness and pain.

Calf muscles attach to the heel as the Achilles Tendon. The growth plate is located at this heel attachment and physical activity will place increased strain on the attachment resulting in inflammation, pain and tenderness. Severs Disease can be exacerbated by poor fitting shoes, sports that involve running and jumping and children that have problems with the alignment of the foot (high arch, low arch, etc).

With correct management Severs Disease will usually settle and not cause any ongoing problems. The sooner Severs Disease is diagnosed and addressed, the quicker the recovery is. Ongoing problems may develop if the cause of factors of Severs Disease are not dealt with.
