what IS DRY NEEDLING?

Dry needling is a technique used by trained Physiotherapists to help reduce pain and improve muscle function. Dry needling is based on Western Medicine principals and has proven an effective method for releasing taut muscles and eliminating the myofascial trigger points. It involves inserting very fine, sterile, single-use needles into specific points in the muscle known as trigger points—tight, sensitive bands of muscle that can cause pain locally or refer pain elsewhere.

When performed by a qualified Physiotherapist, dry needling is a safe and effective treatment. We use:

  • Single use, sterile needles
  • Clean, controlled techniques
  • Thorough screening to ensure it’s appropriate for you

Your physiotherapist will discuss any risks and answer your questions before starting treatment.

What Conditions Can It Help?

Dry needling can be beneficial for a wide range of musculoskeletal issues, including:

  • Neck and shoulder tension
  • Lower back pain
  • Headaches and migraines
  • Sports injuries
  • Postural-related pain

It’s often used alongside other physiotherapy treatments such as exercise therapy, manual therapy, and education.

What Does It Feel Like?

Most people describe the sensation as:

  • A mild prick as the needle enters
  • A deep ache or twitch in the muscle
  • A sense of release or relaxation afterward

Some temporary soreness can occur for 24–48 hours, similar to how you might feel after a good workout.

What to Expect After a Session

After treatment, you may experience:

  • Mild muscle soreness
  • A feeling of looseness or improved movement
  • Reduced pain
  • Better muscle activation

Staying hydrated, gentle movement, and applying heat can help ease any post treatment soreness.
